Why I started Total Evolution Coaching

My leadership journey started in 2010. I was fresh out of college, working for a small healthcare startup. We were growing fast, and I was a “doer” that got more work done than most of my teammates. So, when they needed someone to help lead the team, I was catapulted into a leadership role that I was less than prepared for.

At the time, our company had just acquired a competitor, which meant I was not only leading people (20 of them) for the first time, but leading several people that were twice my age and very upset and fearful that their company was just bought out. I had a serious case of “imposter syndrome,” most days having no clue what I was doing.

Two men on my team were suffering from extreme grief due to their wives miscarrying after years of in vitro. I had another employee that was going through a very messy divorce and custody battle for her children.  No one ever told me that being a leader was like playing psychologist while trying to keep your department afloat.

I realized very quickly that I needed to to surround myself with people who knew more than I did. I found a mentor that I met with twice a month that I could bounce fears, challenges and ideas off of. I called my Dad and asked him for advice almost daily, since he’s been in leadership most of his career. More nights than not, I sobbed uncontrollably in my car, worrying I was doing it all wrong. Worrying that I was the worst leader in the world. Worrying that I was failing everyone.

I kept thinking, “this has to be easier, there has to be a better way.” I was determined to get this leadership thing right. Not for myself, but for my team. I read more books than I can count on leadership, attended workshops, networking events, found other mentors and coaches, and took part in leadership conferences. Every chance I got, I wanted to learn how to be the best leader possible.

I’ve taken on several leadership roles since that first one, at three other companies, including healthcare startups and large corporations. I have certainly failed my team more times than I can count. However, I have also led them to incredible successes that have brought us all to tears (the good kind). Nothing is more rewarding than seeing the pride on your team’s faces when you accomplish something great together.

What I have learned about myself that I was never the “worst” leader.  I was actually a really great leader, who would protect her team to the point of being deemed “Mama Bear.” My passion for leading my team to success, empowering them to grow as people, and constantly exceeding company goals has led me down an incredible path.
